August 11, 2017, Friday – Students, professors and administrators of the Philippine Dominican Center of Institutional Studies (PDCIS) and Institute of Preaching (IP) celebrated the annual Mass of the Holy Spirit. This event also marks the opening of a new academic year and serves as a welcome celebration to the new members of the Province, the Dominican pre-novices. Present were the Formators, Priest Professors, the Regent of Studies of the Province and Moderator of Studies of PDCIS (Br. Jannel Abogado, OP), Director of the Institute of Preaching (Br. Winston Cabading, OP) and the Prior Provincial (Br. Napoleon Sipalay Jr., OP) who presided over the Mass.

The First Reading was read by Ms. Dez Noelle Macasaet (PDCIS Librarian), the Responsorial Psalm was sung by Br. Luigi Bracamonte, OP, and Br. Gary Ni-og, OP, as the organist and the Second Reading was read by Br. John Paul Pamintuan, OP. The Dominican Student-Brothers led the congregation in singing.

Br. Sipalay, Jr., O.P. in his homily mentioned that the Holy Spirit is depicted as a strong driving wind, tongues of fire and breath. The Spirit as a strong, driving wind put order in the chaos during the Creation of the World. He likened this “driving wind” to one’s enthusiasm as he entered the Order, wishing that the students’ motivation will always be there to put order and to persevere in one’s studies. By the “tongues of fire”, we must have the ability to communicate the Truth without any confusions: that people must hear a preacher “in their own native tongues.” He also wished that the “fire” of the students’ vocations would always be kindled and refueled and become like the burning bush, burning but not consumed; burning and giving warmth; burning and giving life to those who are in cold situations. Last but not the least, the “breath” grants one’s knowledge to be applicable in life: that breath which gives life must make a student flexible and the institution to move as one body. He also reminded the students to see the connection of their studies to the reality of life.

Towards the end of the Mass, Br. Abogado, gave his short announcement declaring the Academic Year 2017- 2018 open. The Studium hymn resounded at the Aula Pio V as the Alma Mater song was played with fervor. A sumptuous meal was served and the Dominican Family welcomed the Pre-Novices who showcased their talents at Saint Martin’s Hall at Sto. Domingo Parish after the Mass.
