On August 8, 2016, the Dominican Province of the Philippines (DPP) celebrated the feast day of Our Holy Father Saint Dominic. The celebration this year was a special one as it was within the Jubilee Year of the Order and the Year of Mercy. In the morning, the brethren gathered at the Angelicum College Gymnasium. They were tuned up as they danced and enjoyed zumba. A basketball game between the fathers/pre-novices and the student-brothers followed. The student-brothers won the game with the score of 87–46.
In the afternoon, with the theme, “Sent to Preach: Ministry of Written Words”, the brethren congregated at the Angelicum College Auditorium for the conferences. The first session entitled the “Books and Philippine Languages: The Dominican Contribution” was delivered by Mr. Jorge Mojarro Romero, a faculty member of Instituto Cervantes. According to him, the Dominican friars contributed much in the development and preservation of languages in the Philippines as can be glimpsed in their published works. The second session, “Continuing the Legacy” was discussed by Br. Jesus Miranda Jr., OP, Editor of the Philippiniana Sacra and Br. Louie Coronel, OP, Editor of the BoletinEcclesiastico de Filipinas. Br. Miranda emphasized that the reason behind the Dominicans’ involvement in academics is primarily because of the preaching ministry. Br. Coronel, on the other hand, highlighted the Dominican preaching as a way of sharing the graces we have received from God. After the sessions about the Ministry of Written Words, Br. Roland Mactal, OP, Provincial Liturgist, distributed the Jubilee edition of the Preces. At six in the evening, the celebration of the Holy Eucharist was held at Santo Domingo Church with the members of the Dominican Family. It was presided over by Fr. CielitoAlmazan, OFM, Provincial Minister of the Province of San Pedro Bautista, while Fr. Eugenio Juanilo Lopez, OFM Cap., Provincial Minister of the Capuchins, delivered the homily. An agape followed at the Angelicum College Gymnasium.
